2020: By the Numbers

We know you’ve heard us say it a million times before: Down ballot matters. But as we close out the year that has been 2020, we wanted to take a moment to show you just some of the ways your support changed the course of this year’s election.

First, let’s start with how you invested in down ballot races this year:

Because of you, the Democratic Attorneys General Association raised nearly $2 million through our small dollar digital program alone — the highest we’ve ever raised in a single year!

Your commitment to supporting down ballot races meant that our online fundraising program:

  • Broke our record for the most individual online donations in a single day (748 donations in one day!)
  • Broke our record for the most money raised in a single day ($16,000 raised in one day!)
  • Included donors from all 50 states!

You helped us reach new supporters and voters with our message of electing Democratic AGs, with more than 82% of our 2020 donors being FIRST TIME DONORS! < — this is huge as we continue our fight in 2021 and 2022!

The amount we now raise from recurring monthly donations increased by 83% this year. This means we can invest more money earlier in key states every year.

The number of supporters on our email list — which is one of the most important tools political campaigns and nonprofits have for raising small dollar funds — increased by 35% in 2020, another huge success heading into future elections!

Now, let’s turn to what your investments allowed us to do in our fight to elect Democratic AGs:

Because of your continued support, we were able to reach more than 5.2 MILLION voters and supporters through email and text messaging alone. This level of outreach can be the difference between winning and losing an election in states like North Carolina, where Attorney General Josh Stein won by a little under 14,000 votes.

Down ballot races are often under-funded, under-staffed, and under-resourced. By helping us support incumbent and challenger campaigns, you in turn help individual teams across the country break records, reach voters, and win elections:

  • All together, our candidates raised nearly $30 MILLION dollars in 2020, ensuring that in a tough election year, we didn’t lose a single Democratic seat this cycle.
  • Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro broke records when he received the most votes EVER of any non-presidential candidate in the history of PA.
  • North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein broke fundraising records when he raised more than any non-gubernatorial candidate in state history.

Increasing diversity and representation at the state AG level is a top priority. By protecting our sitting AGs from Republican challengers, we’re able to defend the most diverse group of AGs ever assembled.

Your support also allows DAGA to work with community leaders and connect with reporters across the country to ensure voters know who their Democratic AG candidate is and what they’re fighting for.

In 2020, DAGA sent roughly 600 emails to supporters, released more than 40 digital videos, spent millions of dollars on targeted digital ads and outreach across our different entities, and partnered with creative teams to reach new and non-traditional audiences.

We know that Democratic AGs are the backbone of the Democratic Party. These are leaders who will continue to be on the forefront of critical fights in this country. To put it simply, Democratic AGs are the bench — and there’s no greater proof of this than the fact that THREE former and sitting Democratic AGs have already been tapped for high-profile posts within the Biden-Harris Administration: Vice President Kamala Harris, California AG Xaiver Becerra as Secretary of Health & Human Services, and former Michigan AG and Governor Jennifer Granhom heading up the Department of Energy.

There’s honestly so much more, but because of everything that you did this year to support down ballot races, this list has already gotten quite long. By choosing to be a part of our down ballot movement to elect Democratic AGs, you are actively helping to build our bench for progress long into the future.

So — thank you.

Thank you for supporting down ballot candidates like Democratic AGs.

Thank you for being part of a movement that is committed to lifting up every American.

And thank you for finding ways to give and engage in what has been one of the hardest years many of us can remember.

You did all this, and for that we are so grateful.

Here’s to more victories, more change, and more down ballot races in 2021 and beyond.
